Ancient History of Scoliosis September 26, 2006

Although the phrase “ancient history” is used to refer to things from the past that are no longer relevant today, this is not the case when it comes to Scoliosis.  Recorded through the ages, Scoliosis remains a serious spinal disorder that defies a single easy treatment.

Spinal deformities such as Scoliosis have been depicted on pre-historic cave paintings.  Such cave paintings are the earliest known records of Scoliosis.

The Hindu epic Srimad Bhagwat Mahapuranam, which dates from 3500 to 1800 BC, involves a myth in which Lord Krishna straightens the spine of Kubja, one of his devotees.  Kubja, who was hunchbacked, had spinal deformities in three places.  By pressing het feet down and pulling her chin upwards, Lord Krishna managed to straighten her spine.  This is the first reference to axial traction methods.

This is perhaps the earliest record ever found in the treatment of spinal disorder. I would be glad to know where it is available. It has definitely given a huge contribution to the knowledge.
This is surely a fantastic piece of art.
Thanks to Viviane – excellent work!
